Meet KGHM employees

Paweł Markowski
Executive Director for Production Infrastructure and Hazards

Paweł Markowski
I never planned to be a miner. However, when I started work underground, mining quickly became not only my profession, but also my passion. This is mainly thanks to the development opportunities that KGHM offered me at each step of my career ladder.

In 1986, I graduated from the mining faculty at the University of Technology in Wrocław. Right after graduation, I started work at KGHM. I have been working at KGHM for almost 30 years. During that time, I have gone through all management levels. I started, the same as every graduate, from many years of work underground. First I worked as a trainee, then as a senior miner, shift foreman, senior foreman etc., and finally became the executive director of the Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine. I have worked in all of KGHM’s mines, contributing my engineering experience to the development of technology and the effective mining operations. Since 2012, I have worked in the Head Office of KGHM as the Executive Director for Production Infrastructure and Hazards

The moment I started work in the mine, I began searching for possibilities of further development. I completed post-graduate studies at the University of Economics, first in Human Resources Management, then Finance Management. I believe my career took the course it did both as a result of my own efforts to develop my professional qualifications as well as to the development opportunities offered to me at each step of my career ladder by KGHM.

I owe my dynamic development at KGHM not only to challenges connected with current tasks that require from me openness, inquisitiveness and effective cooperation with the environment, but also a number of training, courses and development programmes organised by the company.

My career at KGHM started in 2003 when I became the Chief Specialist in the Analysis and Market Risk Department. A year later, I took over the position of the Manager of Commodity Risk Department within Safety Department, and in 2007 I became the Director of this department. My responsibilities included the management of all processes in the areas of market and credit risk. In 2008, I became the member of the Board of Directors in KGHM Polish Copper Ltd. , with its registered office in London. Since 2010, I have been working in Vancouver, Canada - first, as the Chief Executive Officer at KGHM Ajax  Mining Inc., and now as Vice-President, IT & Risk Management for KGHM International Ltd.

I owe my dynamic development at KGHM not only to challenges connected with current tasks that require from me openness, inquisitiveness and effective cooperation with the environment. In the past 11 years, I have participated in a number of training sessions and educational programmes. I have completed post-graduate studies at the faculty of Psychology of Management at the University of Wrocław and many specialist courses at international schools, including: London Business School and the University of British Columbia. Currently, I am participating in KGHM's development programme Executive Academy. I am improving my managerial and leadership skills as well as management in the mining industry. Classes are conducted in international teams by a Swiss university, the International Institute for Management Development and an American university, the Colorado School of Mines.

The international expansion of KGHM is an opportunity for me to take up even more challenging tasks, and thus continuously develop my managerial skills.

Senior Process Engineer SGSCM, Chile

Owing to my work in KGHM, my professional career has gained momentum - I have had the opportunity to gain practical knowledge at Lubin, Polkowice and Rudna plants.

Now, I am involved in the commissioning process at Sierra Gorda mine, which is one of the biggest mining projects in the world.

I graduated from the University of Technology in Wrocław, in the faculty of Chemistry, with a specialisation in Metallurgy. I started my cooperation with KGHM when I applied to the university. My first professional steps were taken at the Lubin Concentrator in the Flotation Department as a Production Inspector. After a year, due to my good command of English, I was transferred to the Development Department in Polkowice in the position of Senior Production Inspector.  Then I was promoted to the position of Manager of the Flotation Department of the Rudna Region.

The globalisation of KGHM creates new opportunities for people who wish to develop and face new challenges. I personally have focused on improving my language skills and being open to novel solutions.  In 2011, I started PhD studies in mining and geology as well as raw materials processing - I will be defending my doctoral dissertation next year!

Such a mind-set has made it possible for me to go on a new adventure. I have become involved, since 2013, in the commissioning process at the new open-pit mine Sierra Gorda in Chile.  Today, I work as the Senior Process Engineer. I have access to many innovative technological solutions that are still unknown in Poland. Sierra Gorda is a big undertaking. Here one finds the newest mills, crushers or flotation machinery. I have started learning Spanish so as to make my work in Sierra Gorda more effective. I have also been improving my managerial and production qualifications by being involved in the KGHM Executive Academy.  The training for the Executive Academy takes place in Switzerland and the USA.

I would like to use in Poland the experience gained in Chile. In the next few years, KGHM plans to build a new ore enrichment plant in the vicinity of Głogów. I would like to be a part of this project.

The most important source of knowledge at KGHM are people. Their experience constitutes the greatest value in building qualifications and competencies of young employees.

I started work at KGHM in 2012 as the participant of human resources development programme "Talent Mine". During the programme, I had the opportunity to learn about the company through rotations in three function areas of the company: Strategy, Finance and Production. I was periodically assessed in terms of acquired competencies and realisation of the trusted tasks. I finished this programme successfully and, as a result, I was offered a job at the position of Investor Relations Specialist.

In the beginning, the basic source of knowledge about KGHM for me was the rotary work system. First, I was working in the Department of Controlling and Economic Analysis, then in the Department of Investor Relations Services, Centre for Strategic Analysis and Resource Base, and I was the part of Business Development team at KGHM International. Additionally, I had the opportunity to learn about the work of mining geologists at "Rudna" mine. I plan to expand my knowledge about mining industry during post-graduate studies.

For the past two years, I have been involved in many specialist training and a series of courses supporting the development of managerial competencies. However, the most precious source of knowledge at KGHM are people whose experience, passed on from generation to generation, constitutes the greatest value in building qualifications and competencies of young employees.  I was fortunate to meet many such people on my career path.

Working at KGHM gives me the feeling of being a part of something great. I take part in a truly global undertaking. There is not any other professional satisfaction than work which is interesting, and which I start everyday with enthusiasm.

I consider myself very lucky – I had the opportunity to be involved in every major project within KGHMI. Now when we work closely with Poland I enjoy the multinational culture of our company.

I started my career in KGHMI in 2004 as a corporate controller. My current role is Vice President Accounting and Reporting – I am responsible for financial reporting, budget reporting, budgeting & planning, and tax compliance. In my job I work closely with the CFO, Treasury Department and accounting teams from KGHMI’s projects and operations. During these 10 years I have always been within the finance area and it has been continually challenging, as the company has constantly developed and grown, as has my role.

I consider myself very lucky – I have had the opportunity to be involved in every major project within KGHMI – right from the beginning I participated in the Robinson and Franke acquisition, later in the merger between Quadra and FNX, the establishment of the Sierra Gorda Joint Venture and recently the acquisition by KGHM S.A. All of these experiences gave me the possibility to learn about the mining business and to gain deep insights into the company’s vision and mission. I could also develop myself as a leader - managing my team shaped my leadership style and enabled me to learn more.

I get the most pleasure from the dynamics of the company and its people. The scale of our business is growing at high speed almost every year, so we are constantly developing our business and ourselves. Daily challenges help you to shape your behavior in a positive manner – now when we work closely with Poland I enjoy the multinational culture of KGHMI. I have already been 7 times in Poland and have attended Barborka – I am amazed by your dancing skills and the culture of celebrating this event together.

I have been given trainings which supported my growth and advance in the trade and my career. This is what I enjoy the most about working for KGHMI at the Morrison Deposit. I plan on furthering my education in  the environmental field. When a position of Environmental Technician became available I applied for it and now I have an opportunity to gain a real important for me knowlage in practice.

I am currently an Environmental Technician and have the responsibilities of surface and ground water sampling along with air monitoring.  I started with the Carlota Copper Company in March of 2009 as a Heavy Equipment Operator, driving 240 ton haul trucks. When a position became available in the Environmental Department, I transferred departments since I plan on furthering my education in the environmental field.

I have attended several classes and received several certifications in air emissions, surface and ground water sampling.  I have also worked hand in hand with our consultants and federal regulators that overlook our mine, which has allowed me to gain even more knowledge, that I can use now and in my future endeavors.

I enjoy the friendly environment, the fact that I know every employee at Carlota Copper and their positive attitudes.
